Getting started with wild swimming
A calm, practical starting point for planning an open-water swim, choosing a location and getting support.
Moving from a pool to open water means adapting to a place without lane ropes, a lifeguard at every location or predictable conditions. Begin by learning about the specific site and choosing a supervised or organised setting if you are new.
Build a simple plan
Check local signs, weather and water conditions; identify entry and exit points; and go with a companion or group. Tell someone on land where you are going and when you expect to return. Bring suitable clothing for the conditions and a warm, dry change for afterwards.
Know when to change your plan
Do not enter if the conditions feel beyond your ability or local guidance advises against it. Access varies by place and nation; permission to access land does not automatically mean permission to swim. Read the safety guide and the places and rules guide before choosing a spot.
