Finding a swim group (and why to swim with others)

Ways to find a local swimming group and questions to ask about supervision, plans and conditions.

Another person may be able to notice a problem and raise the alarm, though swimming together does not remove open-water risks. Look for established local clubs, supervised venues and community groups. Ask where sessions take place, who leads them, what safety cover exists and what experience or equipment is expected.

Agree a plan

Share your experience honestly. Agree the route, entry and exit, how to stay together and what to do if someone stops. Check the location rules and current signs. The RNLI advises swimming with others, planning the swim and telling someone where you are going. Confirm arrangements directly; group attendance does not guarantee supervision.
