Open water swimming for beginners: from pool to lake
Move from pool swimming to open water with a location plan, company and a clear exit.
Pool experience helps, but open water adds cold, weather, currents, uneven entry points and changing visibility. For an early swim, choose a managed or organised venue with clear local information and support.
Plan the first swim
- Read current venue rules and identify entry and exit points.
- Check weather, water and local notices before entering.
- Go with a companion or group; tell someone your plan.
- Enter gradually and stay close to an exit while learning the conditions.
- Prepare dry clothes and shelter for afterwards.
Swim England advises planning a route and exit points, checking conditions and swimming with others. Cold water can affect breathing and movement; read the RNLI guidance. Conditions and access vary by location and nation. The kit planner is a checklist, not a safety assessment.
