Wild swimming for beginners (UK): your first swims

A beginner’s guide to choosing a suitable setting, going with support and planning your first open-water swims.

Start by learning about a specific place, not by trying to cover distance. If you are new to open water, consider an organised group or supervised venue where you can learn local conditions and routines.

Before you set off

Take it step by step

Enter gradually and let your breathing settle before moving further. Cold water can affect breathing and movement; get out if you feel unwell, cold or tired. There is no universal safe duration. Conditions and access rules vary across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so follow the advice for your chosen place.

Read the safety guide and use the kit planner as a checklist, not a safety guarantee.
