Tow floats explained: why to use one and how to choose
What a tow float may help with, its limits and what to check in the maker’s instructions.
A tow float is a bright inflatable towed behind a swimmer. It may help visibility and provide something to hold, but is not a lifejacket and cannot guarantee detection or safety.
Use as one layer
Follow maker instructions for inflation and attachment; ensure it does not impede your stroke or snag. Consider local conditions and other water users. The RNLI says to consider a tow float and wear a bright hat alongside planning, swimming with others and checking conditions. At the coast, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard in an emergency.
